The Herrin Fire Department is a combination (paid and paid-on-call) Fire Department of 14 full time employees and 5 paid-on-call firefighters. The 14 full time employees consist of a Fire Chief, 3 Captains, 3 Lieutenants, 6 firefighters and 1 administrative assistant. The Fire Chief and administrative assistant work 8 hour shifts while the remainder of the staff works 24 hour shifts.
The Herrin Fire Department protects a community with a population of 11,700 covering an area of approximately 65 square miles. With an ISO rating of 4. The department has one of the lowest ISO ratings in the area.
Equipment within the department consists of 2-pumpers,1-55ft telesquirt, 1-rescue truck, 1-brush truck, 1-portable air unit, 1-rescue rehabilitation vehicle, 1-hazardous materials trailer, 1-technical rescue trailer and 1-chiefs vehicle. In addition to firefighting equipment the department also has a fire safety trailer to help with public education in the Herrin school system.
In addition to firefighting duties the department also provides services in EMS First Responder, extrication, hazardous materials, high angle rope rescue, below grade rescue and collapse rescue. The department is a member of the MABAS Division 45 and provides team members for the Division 45 Hazardous Materials Team and the Technical Rescue Team.
In addition to firefighting services, the department prides itself in its Fire Prevention Programs. The department provides public Education in the Herrin Unit 4 and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel school systems. In addition the department provides programs for the senior citizens of the community. Also, since 1999 the Herrin Fire Department offers free smoke detectors to the citizens of Herrin.
